AQA 63336 celebrity answers with Mark Watson

One of the most talked about UK comedians, Mark Watson is known for his marathon shows at the Edinburgh Fringe festival, leading to him winning an if.comeddies award in 2006 for capturing the spirit of the festival.

This year at the fringe this year he's led the charge with Alex Horne and Tim Key to find the smartest comedian with the inaugural Festival Cup, supported by AQA 63336.

We interrupted his preparation to ask a few questions. Want to ask a question yourself now for free? Go here.

Q. Who is Mark Watson?
A. I am. But also, depending on which Mark Watson you mean, Mark Watson is a minor footballer, a stick-insect expert, and the editor of a gay magazine.

Q. What's the meaning of life?
A. Someone texted this question to 63336 during my 33-hour show. I think it turned out to be something like 'love, happiness and healthy relationships'.

Q. What's your funniest joke?
A. To judge from audience reaction, it's a rather obvious remark about the war. I don't do it any more though.

Q. What's your favourite AQA answer?
A. I once asked them what proportion of the UK's population had ever visited Australia. They estimated 4%. A bit later, I realised I had absolutely no idea how they arrived at that figure but I admire the confidence.

Q. What's the best bargain you ever bought?
A. I bought a stereo system with £220 I earned working at Waitrose, and it lasted me seven years.

Q. Go home, or stay up all night?
A. Stay up all night at home seems like a good compromise.

Q. You proposed to your wife after a marathon session on stage. How confident were you she would say yes?
A. About 97%. Less than that, and I would never have gone for it. I don't think it's possible to be 100% confident with such a big question.

Q. Most Aquarians are uncertain of their true identity. How true is this in your case?
A. I'd say 'true identity' is nearly impossible to define except as a combination of qualities, some more changeable than others, so - yes I think it is true of me. But I'm not sure whether that's because I was born on February 13 or not.

Q. Do you prefer working on TV, theatre or radio?
A. I prefer doing things where I've got as much control as possible - not in a power-freak way, just it's more satisfying to steer a project the way you want. So live shows, you get more or less total control, radio a high level of control, TV often quite low.

Q. Have you always been funny?
A. No. I'm not even always funny now.

Q. Who do you admire as comic geniuses?
A. The Simpsons writing team and the people who do 'The Onion', the satirical newspaper.
